No passport required: Paradise is right in this island resort in Culion, Palawan

PALAWAN, Philippines – As a child, I always thought of the Maldives as the ultimate travel destination — postcard-perfect beaches, turquoise waters, and glass-floored villas that I’d only see on Windows screensavers, phone wallpapers, or in print magazines.

Fast forward to almost two decades, and there’s proof that paradise doesn’t always require a passport. I discovered that our own localized version exists, right here in Palawan, on the unassuming yet captivating island of Culion.

Sunlight Ecotourism Island Resort (SETIR) combines Maldives-like beauty with a Filipino twist — think pristine waters, seascape views, tranquil charm, and the warmth of local hospitality. Part of the Calamianes Group of Islands, Cuilon is known for its coral reefs and untouched landscapes.

A mere 20- to 30-minute speedboat ride from the bustling town of Coron, SETIR is far from the usual tourist crowds. Its location on a small, quieter island means you’ll find fewer boats and commercial tourist spots, offering a peaceful and exclusive experience.

Culion, located in northern Palawan, is a municipality with a unique history. Once designated as a leper colony during the early 20th century, it became a place of isolation for those affected by the disease. Over time, Culion overcame this challenging chapter and now stands as a quiet island known for its historical significance and natural beauty.

SETIR aims to preserve the secluded island’s natural wonders, working on more sustainability initiatives. While less visited than neighboring Coron, it offers a retreat and a glimpse into the lesser-known but just as beautiful side of Palawan.

CLARK International Airport check-in. Steph Arnaldo/Rappler

Our journey began at Clark International Airport (spacious, clean, and brand-new!), where we were flown by Sunlight Air to Busuanga Airport in Coron. Sunlight Air passengers (the resort’s exclusive partner airline) were welcomed at a dedicated cozy lounge — this exclusive touch set the tone for our special arrival at SETIR.

After a comfortable 30-minute land shuttle ride to Sunlight Hotel Coron (which is also available to stay at if you wish to explore the town), we boarded a speedboat for the 30-40-minute transfer to the island. The seamless transfers — both land and sea — are included in the resort package.

Once we stepped foot on the island, the resort’s remoteness and the breadth of the open-air property and many seaside villas embracing the island’s shores stood out.

Whether you’re there for a quick getaway or an extended stay, nature is at the forefront of the SETIR experience, allowing guests a slow-paced, distractions-free tropical escape.

Laidback luxury and a ‘suite’ escape

SETIR’s open layout invites you to explore at your leisure. The island feels like your own personal sanctuary, with cobblestone and tiled paths winding through foliage.

While most areas are easily accessible by foot (if you’re active enough!), the resort provides buggies for those needing quick transport — just call the front desk for pick-up. There are uphill roads that lead to the highest vantage points of the island. You can also opt to borrow one of SETIR’s bicycles for free!

For me, it’s the villas that are one of SETIR’s key USPs.

The 54 Maldives-inspired overwater villas with 99 rooms are scattered across the 18-hectare property. Each one offers a different level of luxury and exclusivity, depending on your group’s size, budget, and need for privacy. The nightly rates range from P11,000 to P18,000, and can go up to P30,000.

We stayed at the Studio Villa, a cozy 45-sqm water villa set amid mangroves, designed to accommodate two to three guests. It features a single bedroom with a queen bed, but the highlight for me was the private ocean-view balcony with two lounge chairs, providing the best vantage point for an undisturbed view of Culion’s golden sunset dipping into still sea waters. (You can choose if you want the sunrise or sunset villa!)

Design-wise, the villa isn’t modern or too new; however, it exudes a simple, rustic charm, somewhat like a wooden cabin. It comes equipped with all the essentials: a TV, speakers, refrigerator, and property-wide WiFi access.

Every villa booking includes round-trip transfers, a daily breakfast buffet, golf cart service, and non-motorized activities like kayaking, snorkeling, and biking.

Other villa options include the two-bedroom Duplex Villas, ideal for larger groups or families; Cluster Villas for corporate outings; and the Sirakan Villas, popular for its glass floor panes, offering an incredible view of the marine life below, right beneath your feet.

A stay at SETIR’s newest cluster of Salepan Villas is now on my bucket list. Named after the local term for “sunset,” these two-story villas are the epitome of luxury.

Complete with a private infinity plunge pool, hot tub, glass floors, and direct ocean access via ladder, these villas also offer a private chef and butler service. It can fit up to six guests, and can cost around P80,000 a night.

‘Boat’ loads of fun on an island in the sun

Although SETIR isn’t a base resort for town-hopping or island tours, it’s designed for those who are happy to stay on the property. Honestly, who’s complaining? SETIR makes a compelling case for not leaving at all.

INFINITY pool. Steph Arnaldo/Rappler

In the heart of the resort lies the infinity pool, where you can take a dip and order a drink while soaking in the panoramic view of the surrounding islands. For those who like to stay active, the fitness center with ocean views is open. If you’re in the mood for karaoke, SETIR’s upcoming KTV rooms area are available for reservation.

The resort offers snorkeling right by the dock (no need to travel far to discover the underwater biodiversity of Palawan)! You can also try kayaking, jetskiing, paddleboarding, or even taking a guided dive at the nearby shipwreck island, which is a well-known diving spot. Glass boat tours and yacht cruises are also on the SETIR activity menu.

Or, if you’re like me, you can simply lounge by the beach with a book and a smoothie, or feed the fish by the dock at night, right after enjoying a relaxing massage at SETIR’s Sanctuary Spa.

‘Tide’ yourself over

The dining experience at SETIR is diverse, with more than 10 restaurants around the property serving different cuisines and distinct ambiances.

Rare Steakhouse focuses on grilled meats, while Xiang Hotpot and Hikari Teppanyaki bring Asian flavors to the island. For wine and spirits enthusiasts, The Cellar offers a bar lounge experience, while Island Garden keeps things casual with classic, hearty fare using freshly-caught ingredients and local produce.

Don’t miss Mangrove, a standout regional Filipino restaurant that specializes in dishes like litson belly, Ilocano pinakbet, lato salad, Bicol’s pinangat, and the Tausug delicacy Tiyula Itim (braised beef black soup). For laidback drinks at night, Luna serves them by the dock. There’s also Cafe Adlaw or the Poolside Patio for casual grub.

Guests can also arrange a private beach banquet, featuring a curated menu of both continental and Filipino favorites, prepared just for you.

We also started our days at the uphill Sun Cafe with a spread of fresh Filipino breads, pastries, ulam options, fresh fruits, and rich barako coffee, set amid the backdrop of the sea.

A ‘sandsational’ find

SETIR offers a mix of eco-friendly beauty, luxurious accommodations, and exclusive tranquility, making it an easy destination to recommend for both families and couples. Its family-friendly atmosphere offers plenty of activities for kids, while the secluded environment is ideal for couples looking for a quiet, romantic escape.

The resort also provides space for milestone celebrations, like weddings or corporate events, in its function rooms.

It’s not exactly a budget resort, but, with everything included, the price is reasonable. Plus, vacations are meant for a little splurge, right? — especially knowing you’re supporting the local ecotourism in Culion and its communities.

WELCOME to Culion’s hidden gem. Steph Arnaldo/Rappler

Sunlight Ecotourism Island Resort is our own proud slice of paradise in a corner of Palawan that’s off the beaten path, yet full of potential, bringing the essence of the Maldives to our shores. While the island may be hidden away, you’ll realize that some of the best travel destinations can really be found in our own backyard. – Rappler.com
